Preserving Heritage Through Weaving and Textile Arts
Explore how textile arts and weaving have shaped identity, fostered resilience, empowered communities, and preserved heritage in times of crisis

Overview
The intricate art of weaving and textile crafts is not only a means of artistic expression but also a powerful tool for shaping cultural identity, building resilience, and enhancing well-being for individuals and communities. In this discussion, the profound impact that textile traditions have on collective memory and healing, particularly during times of social or political upheaval, is explored. By delving into how textiles serve as both a reflection of identity and a source of emotional and physical resilience, the panelists will provide differing perspectives attesting to the power of creativity.
Nathalie Paarlberg, COO of international NGO Turquoise Mountain, and artist Enam Gbewonyo, represented by TEFAF exhibitor TAFETA, will explore the enduring impact of textile traditions on community wellbeing and the profound connections between art, heritage, and humanity. They will reflect on their shared responsibilities as artists and heritage workers to protect and ensure the cultural continuity of weaving in the face of threats. Paarlberg will provide insights into projects supported by Cultural Emergency Response (CER) that preserve heritage and empower artisans through fair-trade practices in Myanmar, demonstrating how cultural traditions can provide stability during times of conflict; Gbewonyo will share how weaving, embroidery, and wirework express identity and offers spiritual healing.
