Overview

Many of British artist Damien Hirst’s (b. 1965) works explore uncertain aspects of the human experience, focusing on themes such as mortality and religion. His use of animal carcasses suspended in formaldehyde, dead insects, casts of skulls, and other morbid materials, has provoked much controversy.

At first sight, Hirst’s “Tree of Life” (2008) looks like a stained glass window, similar to those found in Gothic churches. Shaped like a lancet arch, it contains several rosette-like patterns rendered in vibrant and iridescent colors. However, upon closer inspection, hundreds of butterfly wings, meticulously arranged, are revealed. Hirst’s preserving of the butterflies subverts as well as reinforces the finality of death, preventing their decay while displaying their lifelessness—“Tree of Life” sits at the intersection of life, death, and religion, encapsulating the themes the artist frequently explores.
