Overview
Over three decades, Minjung Kim (b. 1962) has created works that extend the compositional language of contemporary abstraction through her disciplined and inquisitive approach to East Asian traditions of calligraphy and ink painting. Kim’s recent “Void in Fullness” (2022) exemplifies the artist’s interest in the relationship between emptiness and fullness. The work is created by layering rings of hanji—traditional Korean paper Kim exclusively works with—with burnt holes of differing sizes in their center. Each ring reveals a delicate edge that becomes sculptural with every addition, embracing texture as much as simplicity and order. Already a symbol of infinity, the accumulation of the rings creates a new depth that contains an emptiness and potential for fullness at the same time.
