Collecting in the Renaissance Cabinet of Curiosity
Discover the world of the cabinet of curiosity and the Renaissance Kunstkammer—with Kunstkammer Georg Laue
Saturday, March 18
4PM – 4.30PM CET
Stand 204, MECC Maastricht
Overview
Treasures from the Renaissance and Baroque period are set in a modern collector’s cabinet that exhibitor Georg Laue has recreated for his stand at TEFAF Maastricht inspired by historic records. The cabinet itself is designed after a series of paintings by the 17th-century Hamburg painter Georg Hinz, who specialized in the depiction of Kunstkammer still lifes. Hinz’s paintings give an insight into the princely collecting and display practises of his time, when artworks of precious materials such as ivory, amber, or coral were interacting with rare natural curiosities like shells, coconuts, or exotic animals.
TEFAF Meet the Experts programs celebrate the expertise of our world-renowned exhibitors, spotlighting exceptional objects and the stories they tell across categories and 7,000 years of history.
