Overview
The delicate process of manuscript conservation challenges conservators to combine creativity and science. This talk offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming restoration of one of the most significant illustrated manuscripts of the 15th century, the Book of Hours: Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry was painted by the renowned Limbourg brothers between c. 1411-1416 and held in the collection of the Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly. This talk bridges institutional and academic perspectives on researching and preserving manuscripts, the technical, ethical, and artistic considerations that drive these critical preservation efforts are explored.
Director of the Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly, Mathieu Deldicque provides insight into the broader project and the challenges of managing such a delicate and high-profile restoration, alongside conservator Coralie Barbe’s technical perspective on the manuscript’s restoration. Freelance conservator Dr. Patricia Engel speaks to the academic perspective of the collaborative efforts required from conservators, curators, and restorers when interacting with historically valued fragile objects, such as the Très Riches Heures.
