Contemporary Connoisseurship: Reframing Art History’s Narrative
Examining the shifting art historical practices and the concept of connoisseurship with the Van Gogh Museum and The Frick Collection

Overview
Recent decades have seen a shift from traditional art historical practices focusing on authenticity and provenance—traditionally considered key to curation and exhibition making—to a focus on context, narrative, and identity. This discussion explores the evolving landscape of curation and the discipline of art history within the (changing) context of connoisseurship.
The panelists explore this transformation of the “death of the traditional connoisseur,” from prioritizing a particular way of viewing and examining art to broader social and cultural interpretations, and how these shifting tendencies reshape the art of looking and understanding and, ultimately, the term connoisseurship.
