Archipenko: The Augustin and Maria Sumyk Collection | Ukrainian Institute
Ukrainian from Kyiv, born in 1887, Alexander Archipenko aligned himself with the nascent Cubist movement in Paris which would usher art into the modern era. Exploring the relationship between the negative and positive spaces engendered by interlocking convex and concave surfaces, the artist pioneered the painterly vocabulary of Cubism in sculpture. From 1923 on, Archipenko lived, worked, and taught in the United States. Photos by Pavlo Terekhov, courtesy of the Ukrainian Institute of America
