About the Work

Japanese flower vessels from the Edo period (1600-1868) are rare and many were imported into Paris, London, and New York at the end of the 19th century when Western collectors were discovering the charms of the Japanese aesthetics.

Japanese prints and works of art and ikebana vases, as above, were instrumental in the evolution of art nouveau and therefore of the later art deco and thus can be seen to have had a significant affect on Western art and design of the first half of the 20th century.
