About the Work

This atypical relief by Jan Schoonhoven is perhaps the only real readymade of his hand and therefore comes closest to the ideas of the nul movement of all his works.

Schoonhoven made the relief from a cardboard wrapper that was used to protect drink bottles at the time. He mounted it on the carrier and painted it completely white. He gave it as a gift to Truus Peeters, the wife of his fellow nul artist Henk Peeters, and it has remained in the family ever since.
