About the Work

Compared to central Italy, and with Tuscany in the lead, late Gothic painting in Naples and Campania is far less well-known. Yet between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance this region was a lively crossroads of different cultures, at the heart of a busy Mediterranean thoroughfare. Blending with local tradition, these multiple influences ensured the birth of an enchanting and original figurative language, rich in captivating expressiveness and refined elegance.

A splendid manifestation of these varied stimuli is this "Virgin suckling the Child with Angels", with the "Crucified Christ" above, an important and illuminating addition to our knowledge of late Gothic art in Campania during the Durazzo era. We can see here the precious, sparkling effects obtained by the diversified and tireless tooling of the precious metal leaf, making the work resemble some grand piece of glowing goldsmith’s art. Its author is a rare and still anonymous artist who painted a small group of works including the large contoured "Cross" in the church of the Gesù in Nola, a pinnacle of formidable expressive energy and psychological penetration, unrivalled in early fifteenth-century southern Italian painting.
