About the Work

Scholar's rocks are favoured stones that Chinese scholars displayed in the refined atmosphere of their studio and garden.

Gonshi (供石literally “stone of the spirits”) is an object of contemplation.

It invites the viewer to bond with the energy of the universe, the vital breath or qi, which is embodied in the physical form of the rock.

The play of light and shadow symbolizes the Taoist balance of yin and yang: the harmony of nature.

Gonshi have been collected since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and the first literary work devoted exclusively to the appreciation of the rocks, “The Cloud Forest of Stone Catalogue,” was dated 1133 during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Naturally eroded stones such as this one were highly valued.

The largest rocks were destined for gardens, while smaller models were sought to adorn a scholar’s table.

They feature prominently in the celebrated Ming dynasty gardens of Suzhou.
