About the Work

This exceptionally fine and rare gold and enamel centre seconds duplex pocket watch, crafted by William Ilbery of London around 1820, is a remarkable example of horology made for the Chinese market. Its movement features a highly decorated gilt mechanism with a duplex escapement, a three-arm steel balance with a diamond end-stone, and blued steel balance-spring with compensation weights—hallmarks of Ilbery’s superior craftsmanship.

The watch’s white enamel dial is elegantly designed with black Roman numerals, outer minute markings, and gilt hands, with a centre seconds hand enhancing its precision. The large gold case is richly adorned, with a decorated sprung cuvette and a hinged reverse showcasing a finely enamelled scene. Attributed to the renowned enameller Jean-Louis Richter (1766-1841), the artwork depicts two Georgian-era sisters picking fruit within the grounds of a country manor estate. The outer case and bezel are embellished with a striking combination of blue, white, turquoise, and red enamel, with the bow similarly adorned in pale blue enamel.

Jean-Louis Richter, a master of miniature enamel painting, was known for his exquisite landscapes and marine scenes, many of which can be found in esteemed collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His collaboration with leading watchmakers for the Asian market, including Ilbery, resulted in some of the most visually captivating timepieces of the period. This particular example is especially notable for the exceptional preservation of its principal enamel scene.

William Ilbery (1760-1839) remains one of the most celebrated London watchmakers to produce for the Chinese market. His movements, often incorporating duplex escapements with raised barrels, were highly sought after, and his cases—always of the finest quality—were frequently decorated by the best Genevan enamellers, including Richter and Jean-Francois-Victor Dupont.
