About the Work

Rebay's Rondo is a masterful illustration of her devotion to non-objective art, i.e. abstraction. This painting is typical of her belief in the ability of form and color to express emotions and transcende beyond the physical world.

As opposed to the rigid geometries of earlier abstraction, Rondo resonates with a lyrical fluency, true to its poetic title. The painting suggests a rhythm analogous to musical composition. Surging forms and carefully balanced tonalities create a dynamic, yet harmonious tension, evoking a sense of movement both intuitive and controlled.

Rebay's profound admiration for Kandinsky is clear in Rondo, as is her belief in Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy. This spirituality separates her work from the mostly analytical works of contemporaries such as Mondrian. As Mondrian was trying to find universal order through strict grids, Rebay's paintings breathe, pulse, and call forth an emotional reaction. The gestural nature of Rondo implies a process imbued with intuition, a spontaneous yet controlled creative act.
