About the Work

Spatialism, an avant-garde movement founded by Fontana in 1947, sought to transcend the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture by integrating space and movement into art. Fontana's vision was to create a new art that reflected the technological advancements of the 20th century.

In his Concetto Spaziale, Fontana slashed or punctured the canvas, creating a physical depth opening the space beyond the surface. These gestures were not destructive but a way to break through the two-dimensional plane, exploring the infinite space beyond it. Fontana's approach was revolutionary. By cutting into the canvas, he symbolically opened up new dimensions in art, suggesting that the work could extend into the surrounding environment.
