About the Work

A very rare Dutch Caravaggesque painter, of whom only three signed and dated works are known, the correct reading of the signature was only possible now, after the restoration of the painting and the archival research carried out, and which identified the author as Rembolt van Adelen, a nobleman of Frisian origin. The painting, in an exceptional state of preservation, formerly belonging to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, represents an important testimony of Dutch Caravaggism and places the author among the best followers of this current, in close relation with Dirk van Baburen.
