About the Work

The attribution to Michelangelo Cerquozzi is one of the most evident, from a stylistic point of view. For example, if we compare the characters of the central group with the boys harvesting fruits in the huge composition of the Museo Nacional Del Prado, or with the naturalistic details we can see in the “Ermina Among The Shepherds” of the Uffizi Gallery, the analogies are well recognizable.

It is the unusual, elegant and refined subject – distinct from the more frequent popular themes – that allows us to recognize this, previously unpublished painting, with the “Meleagro favoleggiato in paese da Michelangelo delle Battaglie” mentioned by Giuseppe Ghezzi in the inventory of the collection of the cardinal Giovan Battista Costaguti (1704).

The recovery of the “Melager” represents a significant piece for the (at least virtual) reconstruction of an important chapter in the history of Roman collecting in the modern age.
