About the Work

Debucourt, in rich detail, captures the opulent bourgeois lifestyle of the Ancien Regime in "Promenade de la Galerie du Palais Royal" (c. 1787), a large drawing related to the artist’s well-known print of the same name. Here, he depicted a carnival-like atmosphere in which his cast of characters move through the arcade of the Palais Royal on their way to amuse themselves at one of the many boutiques, theaters, game parlors, and other establishments within the palace.

In the lower right corner, Debucourt includes a jumble of objets d'art that may be a sly social commentary on the excess of the upper class – or is it, “Out with the old, in with the new”?
