About the Work

From 1903 on, Jan Toorop spent his summers in the seaside resort of Domburg, Zeeland. During those relaxed summers, divisionism was the style which best suited him to capture the bright light of Zeeland. In bright-coloured, short, broad brushstrokes he constructed a painting imbued with bright light.

There are no lines to be found. It is colour that shapes the girl's figure against the background. Her prayer seems to lift her above all earthliness. Toorop created a perfect world where man lives in harmony with God's intentions. Always inclined towards mysticism, Toorop, like many of his contemporaries, was always in search of depicting an extrasensory reality. In Zeeland's farming population, he found a glimpse of contact with higher things.
