About the Work

A highly important Kuancai, so-called Coromandel, lacquer screen, intricately decorated to both sides with scenes of The Dutch Tribute and a panoramic view of Hangzhou’s West Lake.

This remarkable screen serves as a testimony to the historical significance of cross-cultural exchanges and diplomatic encounters between Europe and China during the 17th century.

To date, no other screen combining these two scenes has been recorded, with only around ten others known to feature depictions of Europeans.
