About the Work

Gotthard Graubner's works are characterised by their strong colour effect. Untitled (2009) is a striking example of the artist’s late work. The intense apricot colour, between rose and orange, seems to glow from the inside infusing the work with a sense of constant transition and an opening towards the viewer.

Measuring 203 x 124 cm / 80 x 48 ¾ in, the work assimilates to the human figure, intensifying the feeling of encounter frequently experienced in Graubner’s works. Throughout his artistic oeuvre, colour formed the central subject for Graubner. As part of the second generation of German post-war artists, he was concerned with the invention of a new pictorial language. The surface, according to Graubner, should “breathe”, becoming a living entity and generating a constantly renewing experience. In his so-called cushion paintings, he manifested the idea of giving form to colour. By successively saturating the stuffed canvas with highly diluted paint, the artist created his intense tonalities stimulating a simultaneously sensual and intellectual experience: thinking through seeing. He repeatedly referenced European art history and Antique culture in literature, creating a vast complex for his works. In Untitled, the warm colour may allude to the glowing sun or a ripe peach in Arcadia. The painting thus presents a visual treatise manifested in sensual perception, effecting a rich and unique experience.
