About the Work

Furuno Yukiharu is a ceramicist who creates pieces glazed in various shades of blue. Despite studying business administration at university, he decided upon graduation to follow his love for ceramics instead. He experimented with the ash derived from a number of different plants to develop his glazes, and he continues to experiment with new methods to this day, the most recent being his ‘Royal Blue‘ series, which has won a number of awards.

Although each shade has its own special qualities, blue as a whole represents ‘the calmness and beauty of the sky, ocean and the depths of the earth’. Furuno presented his work at the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition) early on in his career, and has done so almost thirty times since then. In 1979, he was made a Fellow of the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Association, and he went on to stage his own exhibitions in the major cities of Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, as well as in Singapore and India. His work was also presented as a gift from the Emperor and Empress of Japan to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, the first state guests of the Reiwa era, in 2019. Today, Furuno is Vice President of the Osaka Art Crafts Association. He also runs a school of ceramic art in a number of cities in the Kansai area.
