About the Work

Dated 1876, our Study of a Man is one of the works of the painter's youth, who was only 23 years old at the time. A precocious artist who presented paintings at the Brussels Salon at the age of 16, Delvin forged a speciality in those years, that of the representation of horses, whose noble power he liked to emphasize. But in the studios of Jean-François Portaels and Alfred Cluysenaar, whom he frequented at the time, the artist also trained in the representation of the human figure with the same application as he had in drawing equines .

On a plain background, the figure of a man with a dark complexion and jet-black beard and hair stands out. The model, of which we only see the profile, is represented as a bust, highlighting her powerful musculature. On his left shoulder lies white and red fur, brushed with large, rapid brushstrokes. Is it a portrait of a man in Saint John the Baptist, for whom fur is one of the main attributes? If the identity of our subject has unfortunately been lost, no doubt the man depicted is a studio model. Jean Delvin, already shows here all his talent as a portraitist for which he will later be recognized.
