About the Work

Ichikawa Masami was born in Bunsui, Niigata Prefecture. After training to produce and engrave metal moulds for Western tableware, he decided to create his own designs and took up an apprenticeship with the metal engraving artist and Living National Treasure Kashima Ikkoku (1898–1996). Ichikawa mostly uses the damascening technique of inlaying softer metals, such as gold or silver, into harder metails to create intricate designs.

He was selected for the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition) for the first time in 1983, and every year from then on. A work he submitted in 1992 was purchased by the Imperial Household Agency, and another in 2002 was purchased by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
