About the Work

This outstanding and extraordinary terracotta high relief, belonging to the maturity of the Florentine Baroque Era, depicts an Adoration of the Shepherds. In the foreground appear the Madonna and Baby Jesus in the centre, Saint Joseph, the Donkey and the Ox on the left, three shepherds on the right, the older of them holding a baby. In the background are visible singing angels flying above Jesus’ head and young boys set in ancient architectures. On the lower right corner is clearly recognizable a noble coat-of-arms.

One of the main distinctive features of this unique Artwork lives in the complexity of the relief: figures in the foreground are nearly all in round so that they are coming out with strong evidence, while the angels in background are in low relief and the younger figures are depicted using the “stiacciato” technique. In this sense this wonderful sculpture condenses all modelling techniques in a single composition distinguished by one-a-kind dynamism.

This Adoration of the Shepherds was most probably made by Girolamo Ticciati in the Florentine workshop of Giovan Battista Foggini and represents an important addiction to the artist’s catalogue, revealing a heraldic detail that allows us to define relief’s dating and origin. The noble coat-of-arms in fact refers to the connection between the Rospigliosi family from Pistoia and the Albizzi family from Florence, documented by the marriage that took place in 1679 between Maria Caterina degli Albizzi and Lorenzo Felice Rospigliosi. Eight children were born from this prolific union and this wonderful Adoration was likely commissioned for the birth of the eighth child occurred in 1701.
