About the Work

In the shadow of an alleyway, near the door of her home, a young woman veiled in green muslin waits, seated beside a narghile. In the background, bright light illuminates the whitewashed walls. As always with Jean-Léon Gérôme, the atmosphere is captivating and time seems suspended.

We marvel at the quality of the materials, particularly the clothes and the transparency of the veils. From a private collection, this painting was exhibited at the Marmottan Monet, Paris during "L'Orient des peintres, du rêve à la lumière" from March to July 2019.
