About the Work

Jean Messagier (1920-1999) transcended notions of abstraction and figuration to explore the raw creative energy of nature and humanity. As a painter, sculptor and engraver, he left a protean body of work in which the material and gesture reflect a ceaseless quest for wonder and renewal. An outstanding draughtsman and remarkable colourist, he never ceased to challenge himself, developing his own gestures and techniques.

At the heart of his work is a fascination with the vitality of the natural world. Landscapes, the cycles of the seasons, changing light and the textures of living matter fuel a deeply organic artistic quest. Messagier captures the fluidity of nature, playing with shapes and materials to transcend the boundaries between figuration and abstraction.

Through his sweeping gestures and vibrant compositions, he seeks to transcribe the essential energy of life, which he sometimes experiments with using unexpected techniques such as frosting.

His work is also characterised by irreverent audacity and great freedom of expression. Messagier borrows as much from the great masters of art history as from popular culture, mixing pictorial quotations and pop figures in compositions that play with humour and misappropriation. These constant dialogues between tradition and modernity reflect an insatiable curiosity and a desire for constant renewal, defying convention while celebrating the essence of painting as a space of absolute freedom.

Rejecting all categorisation, he makes each work a poetic and sensory exploration, an immersion in a universe where painting becomes an extension of nature itself. Matter, gesture and colour combine to express vitality, transformation and wonder at the world. Through a profoundly instinctive and innovative approach, Messagier creates a timeless body of work that carries a singular and universal energy. His works are now part of the permanent collections of prestigious museums and foundations in Europe and the United States.
