About the Work

Rediscovered in the 1980s and mentioned in Palagi's autobiography, it is one of the masterpieces of his first maturity, composed during the Napoleonic era in Palazzo Venezia in Rome - back then the new headquarter of the National Accademy of the Italian reign - documented in its first idea and in the elaboration process by some drawings in his sketchbook.

The painting in its naturalism and in his raphaelesque inspiration overcome the davidian classicism, opening to new solutions that will result very appreciated in the Romantic era, of which Palagi is one of the leading figure in Italy.
