About the Work

The image is taken from the great mosaic of the Battle of Issus in the Archaeological Museum in Naples and depicts the figure of Darius III (380 B.C.-330 B.C.) the last Achaemenid king on the throne of Persia.

The details of the face and robes are treated with extreme care and with effective rendering of pictorial chiaroscuro including precious iridescent effects in the textiles (juxtaposition of pinks in the yellow of the headgear, greenish folds in the purple-red of the mantle) that allude to silk materials. The mosaic is composed by marbles and limestones among which different color gradations can be recognized. The panel is in perfect conditions, with rare falls of tesserae that do not

affect its stability.
