About the Work

This vibrant copper with its wonderfully dynamic and animated scene was painted by the most important master of the conversation piece in 18th century Austria, Johann Georg Platzer.

His lively palette and miniaturist-like technique are beautifully displayed throughout this composition, notably in details such as the masterfully captured characters of the figures, in there sumptuous and richly textured dresses and the fine details of architecture.

Platzer's skill is also evident here in his excellent mastery of artistic techniques. For example, he achieves a coloring through his special treatment of the copper painting ground, which, through the finest nuances and changeant, produces a surface similar to enamel and establishes Platzer's reputation as an unrivalled exponent of this field.

The artist obviously included a self-portrait in this courtly scene, his right arm stretched across his hip in a golden brocade coat with fur trim breeches and a red feather barett in the picture and signed the painting on the pedestal of the sculpted urn to the left.

Other major works by Johann Georg Platzer from the imperial Russian collection remained in St. Petersburg and are now in the Hermitage, as well as Louvre Paris,

The Met NY, Alte Pinakothek Munich, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister Dresden, Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg, etc.
