About the Work

Margot McKinney’s jewellery design ethos is typified by the exuberant use of extra-large gems in irregular baroque shapes. In the case of her new Palette Collier and Earrings suite we see this approach manifesting very clearly, with an array of tumbled gems that are particularly vivid in their colours and hues. The exceptional clarity of the large stones allows for the playfulness of their colours to become the focal point of this important two-piece suite.

Surrounding the large baroque gems are multiple accents in diamond, rare blue zircon, peridot and more, collected by the designer over the course of several years in anticipation of a project such as Palette. This joyful scattering of smaller gems – each faceted and therefore contrasting with the organic, tumbled forms of the large central stones – appears to dance around the latter and frame their vibrant colours.

The complementary earrings in the Palette suite continue the large, baroque stone theme but the colour selection here is confined to the cooler shades of aquamarine, tourmaline and peridot. As with the collier, the tumbled stones appear to float on a sea of smaller, faceted and multi-coloured gems including diamonds, sapphires and amethysts; with the designer stating that she was inspired by the bold tones of nature observed during a beachside Australian summer.
