About the Work

DEIGAN is a female mask used in the Noh theater in Japan.

This specific example was carved and painted by the artist Miyata Chikugo. His hot-iron cartouche is stamped on the inside.

The mask was carved from "hinoki", a kind of Japanese cypress wood, then covered with "gofun" - an undercoat made from crushed oyster shells and a local glue called "nikawa" - and finally delicately painted with colors made from natural pigments. The inner surface is covered with a layer of lacquer to protect the mask during performance.
