About the Work

Following the success of the William Hodges’ three years extensive travels through Upper India in the early 1780s, Thomas Daniell, in 1784, applied for permission to the East India Company to travel to Bengal, with his young nephew William, ‘to follow his profession as an engraver’. Having received the necessary permits they sailed from the Downs on board the Atlas East Indiaman in 1785. They travelled by way of China and took over a year to reach Calcutta.

This painting was done during his mature period at the height of his powers between 1805-1812. Stylistically it resembles other works done during this period which are characterised by flawless brushwork, clarity and carefully delineated architectural details and elegant figures. It is an unexpected addition to his autograph work and the subject matter is of one of the finest Mughal buildings that survives intact to this day.
