About the Work

This previously unpublished and monumental panel is a significant addition to the catalogue of the greatest exponent of the Netherlandish Renaissance. The work, which is presented for the first time exclusively for TEFAF 2025 following a long technical and historical-artistic study, is offered to the public precisely during the happy coincidence of the 450th anniversary of the master's death, which is now being celebrated with international exhibitions. The painting, with its sculptural power and remarkable state of preservation, is the central panel of a triptych, whose wings have been identified with those preserved at the Worcester Art Museum. Furthermore, this painting is now regarded as the initial version of a work whose variant is currently housed at the Albertina Academy of Turin and will be exhibited alongside it in a dossier-exhibition organized to mark this significant find.

For its striking beauty, its close connection with Italian art combined with Flemish colorism, this composition is one of the most significant works by Maarten van Heemskerck to have ever appeared on the market.
