About the Work

Shuzaburo Yasuda (1906 - 1982), sculptor and his wife, met Moore in his studio in 1936, where Yasuda bought the alabaster ‘Head.’ He returned to Japan in 1937. He showed it to Kakuzo Tatehata, sculptor. After the World War Two, the piece was exhibited at the « Modern Sculpture - Japan and Europe» Exhibition in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 1953 and perhaps at some other exhibitions. Shikio Yasuda, architect is the son of Shuzaburo Yasuda. Yasuda Family is one of the biggest financial group in Japan.»

Moore wrote to Mr Yasuda on 7 July 1951:« I am very sorry to hear that your house was bombed during the war and that you lost most of your things including the drawing of mine and books and pictures, but I am pleased to hear that you were able to save the small head of my work.»
