About the Work

Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993) is a painter of the “lost generation” who had her breakthrough between the two world wars and was hardly recognized in Germany after 1945.

After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, her career started 1931 with her first solo exhibition at the Gurlitt Gallery (Berlin) and her participation in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition at Bellevue Palace.

From 1933 onwards, the National Socialists made it increasingly difficult for her to work due to her Jewish origins. In 1937, she emigrated to Sweden, where she lived until her death.

The style of the work "Die Mutter der Künstlerin (Meta Laserstein) vor Häusern" and the unconventional support suggest that this unsigned and undated painting is a very early work by the artist, possibly created before she began studying art in 1921.
