About the Work

Alberto Savinio, known for his painting as well as for his writing and research on music, was a founding member of Metaphysical painting alongside his brother Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà in 1915. "Idillio marino" (1944) embodies many of the lessons of the school of painting with its surreal and dystopian scenery of greys on which two large creatures arise. Made up of organic shapes and classic architectural elements, the two bodies echo Savinio's youth in Greece.

The juxtaposition between the vibrancy of the creatures and the darkness of the landscape creates a feeling a timeless, still, dreamlike (or nightmare-ish) setting which still includes a hint of humour.
