About the Work

Born in 1914, Asger Jorn was a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, and author. He was a founding member of the avant-garde CoBrA movement, which are the initials of the three capitals Co for Copenhagen with Jorn, Br for Brussels with Alechinsky and A for Amsterdam with Appel and Corneille. In 1936 he travelled to Paris to become a student of Kandinsky. However, when he discovered that Kandinsky was having economic difficulties, barely able to sell his own paintings, Jorn decided to join Fernand Léger's Académie Contemporaine; it was during this period that he turned away from figurative painting and to abstract art. Horizons troublés is typical of the artist's post-war style, composed of vibrant abstract faces spread across the canvas.

Né en 1914, Asger Jorn était un peintre, sculpteur, céramiste et auteur danois. Il fut membre fondateur du mouvement d'avant-garde CoBrA, qui sont les initiales des trois capitales Co pour Copenhague avec Jorn, Br pour Bruxelles avec Alechinsky et A pour Amsterdam avec Appel et Corneille. En 1936, il se rend à Paris pour devenir l'élève de Kandinsky. Cependant, lorsqu'il découvre que Kandinsky connaît des difficultés économiques, à peine capable de vendre ses propres tableaux, Jorn décide de rejoindre l'Académie Contemporaine de Fernand Léger ; c'est durant cette période qu'il se détourne de la peinture figurative et se tourne vers l'art abstrait. Horizons troublés est typique du style d'après-guerre de l'artiste, composé de visages abstraits vibrants répartis sur la toile.
