About the Work

This work, dated 1963-1964, is part of the series titled Manteau de la Vierge, where Simon Hantaï explores the innovative technique of folding. This technique, begun in 1960, three years prior to the creation of this work, is inspired by the Marian iconography of his childhood. Hantai opts for shades of green and blue to evoke the warmth and maternal protection of the cloak.

By folding and painting only the surface areas, he allows randomness to play a guiding role in his creative process. The folds created by Simon Hantai, both concave and raised, appear to cut the canvas like incisions in the paint.
