About the Work

This exquisite ring is set with a rare 18th century, unusually cut, pyramid shaped emerald. The historical stone is, unconventionally, reverse set with step faceting leading to the tip of the emerald. Such setting brings out deep, verdant hue testifying to Colombian provenance of the old stone.

Emeralds originating from Colombia are prominent for their unmatched intensity of colour, which, ever since their discovery, fascinated royalties around the world. These treasures found an abundant market among some of their most notable admirers, both Mughal emperors as well as their later successors – Maharajas. Traded in Europe and transported to India by the Portuguese, the stones enchanted Indian rulers, who in turn celebrated them lavishly in ornamentation of their most precious belongings, echoes of which reverberate through this historical emerald. The intensity of colour is matched with an 18K white gold band set with custom-cut, arched-shaped flat diamonds. The diamonds, phenomenally engineered to match the curve of the band, form a Mughal see-through pattern, limpid quality of which beautifully blends with the intensity of the central stone.
