Emeralds originating from Colombia are prominent for their unmatched intensity of colour, which, ever since their discovery, fascinated royalties around the world. These treasures found an abundant market among some of their most notable admirers, both Mughal emperors as well as their later successors – Maharajas. Traded in Europe and transported to India by the Portuguese, the stones enchanted Indian rulers, who in turn celebrated them lavishly in ornamentation of their most precious belongings, echoes of which reverberate through this historical emerald.
