About the Work

Gerhard Richter’s ongoing curiosity took him on a lifelong quest into the possibilities of painting and creation of directed chance, inviting unique encounters between tones and forms. Abstraktes Bild (522-3) manifests through the squeegee a vast kaleidoscope of colours, opening a multitude of conceptual and compositional possibilities. Blurring out the excess of unimportant information by repeatedly reworking his paintings, Richter creates volatile fields of colour that simultaneously contradict and belong together.
