About the Work

This vase by Imaemon XIV showcases a masterful blend of traditional and innovative ceramic techniques. The overglaze enamel decorations, or iro-e, feature intricate hand-painted designs applied over a glossy glazed surface, with vibrant colors made from traditional wa enogu pigments. The vase also incorporates Imaemon XIV’s unique "snowflake" ink resist technique (sekka sumihajiki), which combines delicate white slip with ink-resist brushwork.

This innovation results in subtle, ethereal patterns that emerge after firing, as the ink evaporates, leaving behind crisp, white designs. The interplay of these methods demonstrates the artist's skillful balance of materials and firing techniques, creating a striking and sophisticated piece.
