About the Work

This glass sculpture by Yoichi Ohira is crafted from hand-blown colored glass murrine, with powdered inserts incorporated into the design. The murrine, small slices of glass that create distinct patterns, are arranged within the piece to produce a vibrant, multi-layered effect. The addition of powder inserts further enhances the texture and depth of the glass, creating a nuanced visual experience.

The surface of the sculpture features partial carving and incising, a technique in which the surface is delicately etched to create detailed patterns and textures. These surface treatments contribute to the piece’s overall depth and visual complexity.

The work was created in collaboration with two skilled Murano glass artisans: Andrea Zilio, a master glassblower, and Giacomo Barbini, a master cutter and grinder. Zilio's expertise in shaping glass and Barbini's skill in cutting and refining the surface are evident in the piece's precise execution.

The underside of the sculpture is marked with the artist’s signature, along with information indicating its unique status as a one-of-a-kind work: ‘Yoichi Ohira/ 1/1 unico/ M. A. Zilio/ M. G. Barbini/ Friday 25-05-2007/ Murano’. The inclusion of “1/1 unico” signifies that this is a singular, non-reproducible piece. The artist's cypher is also present, confirming its authenticity. The sculpture measures 23.7 cm (9⅓ inches) in height.
