About the Work

This Maori treasure box was the last acquisition of Captain A.W.F. Fuller (1882-1961) in July 1961; offered to Dr. Roland Force to thank him for having produced the catalogue of his collection, now held at the Field Museum in Chicago, USA.

The box has an indigenous repair on the lid; this detail is noted by Force in his introduction to the catalogue of the Fuller collection: “we shared a mutual attraction to immersion in the ethnology of the Pacific world. The last specimen he collected, in July of 1961, he gave to me because he believed (rightly) that I would appreciate the indigenous repair to one of its parts.” (Force, R.W. and Force, M., The Fuller Collection of Pacific Artifacts, New York –Washington, Praeger publishers, 1971, p. xiii.).
