About the Work

The self-portrait was made shortly after she moved to California and married Jonas Salk. The portrait echoes the happiness she found in her marriage and the freedom she had in California, away from the intense scrutiny she was facing in France following the release of Life With Picasso in 1964. Throughout the 1940s, Gilot worked almost exclusively in charcoal on paper, and without the use of color.

Through this period of singular dedication, Gilot was able to cultivate a distinct sense of confidence in her mark-making, which is especially evident within this work.
