About the Work

“I have your Leda on my desk, a bronze example. I never stop talking to her, taking her in my hand, caressing her... and I have an exquisite sensation” Mirbeau to Maillol, 1904.

More than any other, this model is representative of Maillol's style in the early 20th century, when he created a whole series of bathers and collaborated with art dealer Ambroise Vollard. Above all, it was a great success for the sculptor and his favorite bather “it’s constructed from every angle”, he said; Leda was appreciated by Octave Mirbeau, who counted it among the works in his collection; and Rodin admired this work. It also appears in a painting by Vuillard, Nature morte avec Léda (circa 1902).

This example from the Vollard editions has all the characteristics of a very fine cast by Florentin Godard. Numerous casts from this edition are held in public collections: Copenhagen, Statens Museum for Kunst; Chicago, Art Institute; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art; New York, Museum of Modern Art; San Francisco, de Young Legion of Honor; Washington, National Gallery of Art; Williamstown, Williams College Museum of Art.
