Over the past three decades our gallery, run by Pedro Aguiar-Branco, and nowadays by his son, Diogo Aguiar-Branco, has focused in the works of art that emerge from the Portuguese maritime expansion or Age of Exploration, and is intrinsically connected with the encounter between cultures, and the sharing of perspectives and knowledge. The development of active commercial relations with Asia, Africa, and the Americas represents to Portugal, and indeed to the rest of the world, what it is now considered the first globalization, and originated what we aim to present: kunstkammer objects from the 15th - 18th centuries, exotica, naturalia, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, coral and ivory, rock crystal, lacquer, porcelain, cabinets and jewellery, and all that is rare, exotic and precious. The art that derives from this miscegenation tells a story not only of technical proficiency, beauty and luxury, but also of the enchantment of wanting to have, to possess, to gather with pleasure objects, to make connections between them, to know how to talk about them, their stories, to know their route, materials and techniques.
